The Island

Bunaken Island is short boat ride away from Manado. The main and biggest village is "Bunaken Village". This is where all the public boats go to and leave to Manado. Arto Moro Bunaken has nice sandy beaches great for swimming. The best snorkeling spots are straight in front of the village.

The village is still relatively traditional with most people working as fishermen, boat builders or running a small tourist place. From the village of Bunaken there is one paved road to the other small villages. The road winds its way through the jungle. On the way you pass many resorts located outside the village behind the mangroves.

The next village you pass is Tanjung Parigi, in the middle of the island, followed by Alun Banua located at the other end of the island. At Tanjung Parigi there is another beach called "Taman Laut Bunaken" or "pantai Liang". Most Chinese day tourists go to this beach.

Marine Park

A very rich coral ecosystem covers most of Bunaken National Park, dominated by fringing reef and barrier reef corals. There are about 390 species of coral recorded in the waters of the Park. A distinct feature is a 25-50 meter vertical coral wall. This is inhabited by 13 coral genuses. The park is also abundant in different species of fish, marine mammals and reptiles, birds, Mollusks and mangrove species. About 2000 species of fish live in the waters of the park, among them being the Emperor Angelfish, Almaco Jack, Spotted Seahorse, Blue Striped Snapper, Pink Basslet and Two-lined Monocle Bream. The species of mollusk include the Giant Clam, Horned Helmet Shells, Chambered Nautilus, and Ascidians.
The park has seven times more genera of coral than Hawaii, and more than 70% of all the known fish species of the Indo-Western Pacific. The absence of a continental shelf allows the coastal area of the park to drop directly deep down to the sea bed. The sea depth between the different islands of the National Park is 200 to 1,840 meters.
